Carmen was born in Havana, Cuba and migrated to the United States in 1963 with her family. The family moved to Decatur, Georgia where Carmen still lives today.
Carmen Agra Deedy began writing children’s books as a young mother. She has now written 8 children’s books. The first book she wrote was Tree Man, which she wrote in 1993. Later in 1994 Carmen wrote The Library Dragon and Agatha’s Feather Bed. In 1995 she wrote The Last Dance. Five years later in 2000 Carmen wrote The Yellow Star: The Legend of King Christian X of Denmark, which has won over twenty awards, the most of any of her books. The Secret of Old Zeb was written in 2002 and tells an adorable story about a boy learning to find his passion and follow his dreams. Carmen had been doing an audio series on NPR called All Things Considered which features 12 short stories from her childhood as she grew up in Decatur, Georgia with her Cuban family. The series was recorded and put into the collection called Growing Up Cuban: In Decatur, Georgia. In 2007, Carmen wrote my personal favorite, Martina the Beautiful Cockroach. Her most recent piece is 14 Cows for America.
